I have been here in Kansas City for 4 years now and had not yet been able to attend this convention till this year. Well, there was no convention the last 2 years and the other years were just too hectic at the time to go. I have to say, I was missing out. Recruits is staged at Lee's Summit HS and is a well done production. There were many vendors selling used games, new gaming stuff, T-shirts, and other misc items. I'll start off with my loot for the day.
The starter army was $50 and with that came another $50 in credit to get additional items. So I got the board games as well. He didn't have it priced at $50 but I felt I was more than getting my value. There was a woman selling her dice bags. She had hundreds of them. I felt it was time to retire, or add to, my Crown Royal bag so I picked up this nifty dice bag.
The convention was well attended, though I was told it is usually bigger. I suppose the post covid world is still getting on its feet. I would imagine it will claw its way back to wherever it was prior to that. I saw some good looking games set up, and played in a couple good ones. I didn't take very many pics as I was more focused on getting into the games I wanted. Here are some of the ones I did not play in.

Eckmuhl in 6mm using Blucher
I had seen on the event schedule Friday night that there was to be some Saga demos going on Saturday. They started a bit late but that gave me time to shop. I haven't played Saga but a couple times when first edition came out. So I was looking for a training game, and to find some like minded people to game with. I accomplished both missions and it looks like I will be doing some Saga in the near future. The game we played was Romans v Sassanids.
The second game was an AWI battle using regimental Fire & Fury. There are modifiers and scenarios on the F&F website for AWI, 1812, and the MAW. Fire & Fury is a favorite rules system of mine and I was excited to see a game being put on. Here are a few shots of the game.
I had an American command made up of Maryland Continentals. They did not fare too well against their Hessian opponents but they did ok. The British did manage to take the ridge in the center of the board and winning a victory in the process. The variant for the AWI plays well, and it was easy enough to pick up, especially if you have played F&F in the past. Playing this further cemented my plans to base my AWI for F&F.
After this a wandered around a bit and then left for home. Overall I really enjoyed the con one of the best I have attended. There were many other things going on that I have not mentioned, DBA, Middle Earth, and 40K tournaments. Old West game, a couple naval games, Warlord Games was demoing stuff, a Vietnam game, 54mm French and Indian War, and a few others.
I'll definitely be returning, and, I am starting to plan games to put on next year. I'll start small since its been a long time since I have had the opportunity to run a game. Probably Palo Alto using the MAW variant for RF&F. Its a smaller, more manageable battle. |
